10 Hair Styling Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Hair

The everyday habits behind dry, porous, breaking hair in the UAE, and the simple swaps that fix each one.

If your hair feels rough, dry and impossible to keep smooth no matter how much you spend on products, the cause is often your styling routine combined with the UAE's conditions. Hard, mineral-dense tap water leaves the hair porous, and porous hair absorbs heat faster than healthy hair. That means the same straightener setting that is fine for someone in Europe can quietly damage hair in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. Add air conditioning that pulls moisture out of the hair all year, and summer days of 80–95% humidity that make styles drop, so we style again and again, and it's easy to see why hair in the Gulf takes so much damage. The good news is that every mistake on this list has a simple fix, and most cost nothing. Go through these ten honestly, change the ones that apply to you, and your hair should feel softer and look shinier within a few weeks.

Why UAE Hair Takes More Damage

💧

The region's hardest water

Mineral deposits raise the cuticle and make hair porous, so heat reaches the inside of the strand much faster.

❄️

Year-round AC

Dry, cold indoor air pulls moisture out of the hair every day, so it arrives at every styling session already dehydrated.

🌡️

Humidity forces restyling

When 80–95% outdoor humidity undoes a style in minutes, we style again. More sessions mean more heat damage.

☀️

Intense sun

Strong sun for most of the year dries and weakens the hair's surface, especially on color-treated hair.

The 10 Mistakes (and the Fixes)

1

Using international temperature advice

Most tutorials and tool manuals recommend 180–200°C. On porous UAE hair, that heat is simply too much: the strand loses moisture fast and turns fuzzy instead of glossy. The fix: style 5–8°C lower than you would in Lebanon or Europe, using the UAE ranges below. Our Heat Protectant 101 guide explains why in detail.

Hair type UAE styling range
Fine 138–152°C
Medium 148–163°C
Thick 158–175°C
Color-treated (max) 140°C
Diffuser (curly) 135–150°C
2

Straightening or curling damp hair

Porous hair holds water longer than you'd expect. If a hot plate touches hair that is even slightly damp, the trapped water boils inside the strand and causes damage no product can undo. The fix: blow-dry until your hair is completely dry, roots first, before any straightener or curler.

3

Skipping heat protectant

On porous hair, heat protectant matters even more, because it slows how fast heat travels into an already-open cuticle. The fix: spray protectant on damp hair before every blow-dry, section by section, and comb it through. Mist lightly again before a day-two touch-up.

4

Clarifying only once a month

UAE water deposits minerals much faster than in the Levant. After a month, hair is coated, stiff and dull, and the mineral layer heats unevenly, creating hot spots along the strand. The fix: clarify every 10 days, followed by a conditioner on the lengths. Your hair will style faster, with less heat.

5

Making several passes on each section

Every extra pass reheats the outer layer of the hair. On porous UAE hair, three quick passes can do more damage than you'd see in a month of careful styling. The fix: work in thinner sections and make one slow, controlled pass. If a section isn't smooth after that, it was too thick.

6

Cutting the cool shot short

A few seconds of cool air isn't enough to close the cuticle on porous hair. The style stays soft, humidity gets in, the style drops, and you restyle: more heat, more damage. The fix: hold a cool shot on every section for a full 20 seconds. Your style lasts longer, so you use your tools less.

7

Ignoring AC dryness

Hours in cold, dry AC pull moisture from the hair every day, so it's already dehydrated when you heat it. Dehydrated hair burns more easily and frizzes more when it goes outside. The fix: deep condition once a week, and finish styled hair with a drop of argan oil on the ends to slow moisture loss in the AC.

8

Brushing wet hair from the roots down

Wet, porous hair stretches and snaps easily. Dragging a brush from root to tip pushes knots down to the weakest ends. The fix: detangle from the ends up in small sections with a gentle brush or wide-tooth comb, holding the hair above the knot.

9

Styling with dirty tools and brushes

Product, oil and mineral residue build up quickly on plates, barrels and bristles in the UAE. Dirty plates drag and heat unevenly, and a dirty brush spreads old residue through clean hair. The fix: wipe cool, unplugged tools with a damp cloth, and clean your brush weekly. A self-cleaning brush makes it effortless.

10

Tight styles on warm hair

Tying freshly styled, still-warm hair into a tight ponytail or bun pulls on strands at their weakest moment. Repeated tension in the same spot leads to breakage at the hairline and crown. The fix: let hair cool fully before tying it up, keep ponytails loose, and change the position every day.

🇦🇪 UAE tip: style once, not three times

The biggest damage reduction in the UAE comes from making each style last, so you heat your hair less often. Clarify every 10 days, style at UAE temperatures, give every section the full 20-second cool shot, and let your hair settle in the AC for five minutes before going outside. Keep a cordless tool in your bag for quick front-piece touch-ups instead of restyling your whole head after the humidity hits. In peak summer (June to September), favor sleek gathered styles that hold up to the heat.

Your Damage-Free Styling Checklist

Before

Clarified within 10 days. Detangled from the ends up. Heat protectant on damp hair. Hair 100% dry before any hot plate.

During

UAE temperature for your hair type, 5–8°C lower than elsewhere. Thin sections. One slow pass.

After

20-second cool shot on every section. Five minutes in the AC before going out. Argan oil on the ends.

Every week

Deep condition once. Clean your brush and wipe your tools. Check your ends and trim when needed.

Summer vs Winter: Adjusting Your Routine in the UAE

Your hair's needs change with the UAE's two seasons. From June to September, outdoor humidity and intense sun are the main enemies: style less often, choose sleek or gathered looks that survive the heat, and never skip the 20-second cool shot. From November to March, the air outdoors is milder and styles hold longer, but you spend more evenings at outdoor events and the AC still dries hair indoors. That's the season to enjoy loose curls and blowouts, keep up weekly deep conditioning and make the most of styles that last two days, which halves the heat your hair takes each week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my hair is heat damaged?

Look for ends that feel rough or straw-like, split ends that return quickly after a trim, frizz even indoors, hair that won't hold a curl and color that fades fast. Gently stretch a single strand: healthy hair stretches a little and springs back, damaged hair snaps almost immediately. In the UAE, very porous hair also absorbs water and product extremely fast and takes a long time to dry. If you see these signs, lower your temperature, clarify every 10 days and use protectant every time.

Why is my hair so much drier since moving to the UAE?

It's a very common experience. UAE tap water is among the most mineral-dense in the region, and the minerals build up on the hair, lifting the cuticle and making it porous. At the same time, year-round AC pulls moisture out of the hair. Together, they leave hair dry, rough and more easily damaged by heat. Clarifying every 10 days, deep conditioning weekly, styling 5–8°C lower than before and finishing with argan oil make a clear difference within a few weeks.

Can heat damage be repaired?

Damage to the hair itself can't be fully reversed, but you can stop it getting worse and make hair look and feel much healthier. Conditioning treatments and oils smooth the cuticle and add shine, regular trims remove the worst ends, and clarifying removes the mineral layer that makes damaged hair look even duller. Changing your styling habits is what protects the new growth.

How often is it safe to heat style in the UAE?

Two to three heat sessions a week is a reasonable goal for most hair. In the UAE, the bigger win is making each style last longer so you don't need to restyle after humidity: style at UAE temperatures, seal every section with a 20-second cool shot and let your hair settle in the AC before going out. Use cordless tools for quick touch-ups instead of full restyles.

Is an air styler less damaging than a straightener?

Generally, yes. Air stylers shape hair with airflow at lower temperatures instead of pressing it between hot plates, which makes them a good daily option for porous UAE hair, especially fine or color-treated hair. Straighteners are still fine when used at the right temperature, on completely dry hair, with protectant and one slow pass. Many women use an air styler during the week and a straightener for special occasions.

Does a shower filter help with hair damage in the UAE?

A shower filter can reduce some of the minerals and chlorine in the water, and many people in the UAE find their hair feels softer with one. It isn't a substitute for clarifying, though, because build-up still collects over time from water and products. Use a filter if you like, keep clarifying every 10 days, and focus on the styling habits above. Our guide to why curls fall flat shows how mineral build-up affects styling too.
